Starts September 23, 2021

Virtual- 40 minutes of music per week (synchronous & asynchronous)

Thursdays- Zoom class 4:00-4:25pm (10 classes)

Melissa Rooklidge, Kodály Instructor

Online Kodály Musicianship classes will consist of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Asynchronous- there will be a pre-recorded weekly video from the instructor, Melissa Rooklidge, with new songs and instructions for the corresponding music worksheet for the student. Synchronous- weekly 25 minute Zoom class with interactive songs, musical activities, and games.

This course will review concepts from Kodály Level 1 and 2 (previous courses not required), and will deepen students’ musicianship skills. In the fall semester, it will focus on developing singing and aural skills through solfège in the pentatonic scale (“do re mi so la”) and continue to build music literacy skills with the following rhythms in various combinations: quarter note, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, half note and quarter rest. Students will read, write, compose, and improvise with these notes and rhythms in the major keys of C, G, and F, as well as learn and conduct in 4/4 meter. In the spring semester, this course will continue to incorporate the notes and rhythms from the fall semester and add the solfège note (“low la”), letter names of the treble clef, and two rhythm combinations of one eighth note and two sixteenth notes. Utilizing musical materials, classroom instruments, and body percussion, students will learn an array of songs in varying meters, tempos, and keys to continue the development of their musicianship skills. Come experience the joy of making music in Kodály class!
