Larry Burroughs

Trumpet instruction

Larry Burroughs is a free-lance trumpet player and private teacher in upstate New York. Originally from Greensboro, NC, Larry played lead trumpet and served as musical director for Carnival Cruise Line for over ten years. Throughout his performance career, Larry has enjoyed playing a wide variety of styles. He has performed with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, the Oklahoma Composers Orchestra, The Royal Dukes Rock Band in Oklahoma City, the Frontier Brass Band, and many musicals and jazz ensembles. He has also recorded on several albums, including Ofelia del Rosal’s Vino Tinto and Simón Díaz Universal.

As an educator, Larry frequently gives masterclasses to middle school and high school students, including presenting at the Fifth Annual William Adam International Trumpet Festival in 2019. He teaches that mastery occurs in simplicity. Simple, fundamental exercises are a hallmark of his teaching style, and he encourages students to play them with the most beautiful sound they can imagine. This makes trumpet playing easier and thus more enjoyable, and allows students to attain greater success with harder music. Most of all, he wants his students to enjoy playing the trumpet and making music with their friends.

Larry currently lives in Elmira, NY with his wife Lindsey and their cat, Norman and
dog, Boomer. His primary teachers are Greg Wing and Dr. Karl Sievers.
