The jazz program at Opus Ithaca offers students from all over Tompkins County a place to learn jazz instrumental music. Students will study improvisation, theory, history, and the culture of jazz with professional faculty in an ensemble setting. All students are welcome (within the age requirements) from beginning to advanced. Students are encouraged to be enrolled in multiple groups.

For your audition:

  1. Play any prepared piece of your choosing (does not have to be jazz, but can be). 
  2. Sight read a short 8-bar segment. 
  3. Scales: up to 4 sharps and flats (you will be asked to play one or two). 
  4. OPTIONAL: improvise to a Blues in F or Bb; background track provided. 

Jazz@Opus Ensemble – audition required.
Jazz@Opus Workshop – placement audition required, all students welcome.
Jazz@Opus Young Women Musicians – no audition required!
Jazz@Opus Combos – placement audition required to place students in ensembles.
